The River Ness salmon fishing season normally begins on January 15 and ends on October 15. As a conservation measure, IAC has delayed the starting date on the club’s water to February 1. The best months are usually June, July, August and September with spring fish most likely in February, March, April and May, depending on the water height. Fresh-run, sea-liced salmon are often seen and caught on the very last day of the season.
Anglers who regularly fish IAC’s water have their favourite spots but all pools and streams will produce fish at the height of the season, from the Red Braes downstream to the Castle and Legion Pools. The most popular spring pools are the Weir and Mill Stream. These pools will also fish well throughout the summer and autumn, along with the MacIntyre, General’s Well and Little Isle. The Silver Wells, Leaven Trees and Castle pools are also worth a cast or two. In the autumn, the Red Braes can be a particularly productive pool.
Access
Access to all pools can be gained from either side of the river. From the west (left bank), car parks are available at the Little Isle Pool (a short distance upstream from the Infirmary Pedestrian Bridge), opposite the Ness Islands bridge (General’s Well and Provan’s Pool) and at the Whin Island Play Park (MacIntyre, Mill Stream, Weir and Red Braes). From the east (right bank), along Island Bank Road, anglers can access the Little Isle at the tail of the Ness Islands, the MacIntyre from Holm Avenue and the MacIntyre, Mill Stream, Weir and Red Braes from Holm Mills.
Anglers’ huts are located at the Little Isle and MacIntyre Pools on the left bank and at the Mill Stream on the right bank. Visitors are welcome for a chat and to swap angling stories while enjoying a cup of tea or coffee.
